With gyms opening and re-closing, huge box gyms like 24 Hour Fitness filing for bankruptcy, and more home gyms being flashed all over the web than sports these days…it has me wondering if training will ever be the same.
Over the last four months, I’ve seen it all. We have pivoted, reinstated, adapted, experimented, failed, succeeded, and ultimately closed due to this pandemic. So it is safe to say, as a gym owner, I have some pretty good instincts as to what we all can expect. Are Zoom workouts the future of fitness? Will every “insta-famous” trainer be wheeling in clients left and right from the naked selfies and “ALMOST SOLD OUT” catchy phrases? How about the big box gyms that are left? Will people be flocking back to hop on dirty cardio equipment and pieces people are using constantly all day long? What about GROUP fitness? Will it ever get back to what it was where the family aspect and community built within each class/gym elicits the strong connection between health and fitness? All these questions are what every gym owner and fitness enthusiast wants to know heading into the fall season…yet, we just are unsure of what to expect. Let's be honest with ourselves, we don’t even know what the schools are doing yet, so that is a HUGE deciding factor of how the fitness and gym world will play out. No one will say it’s easy to fit in time to get to the gym with a family of 3-4 kids needing basically homeschooled! So that brings me to my next question….the “personal” part of all this! Personal training has its unique benefits. Ones that are often unseen because, well…for many, the cost to hire a personal trainer exceeds their budget(or their lack of perceived value). I've had the luxury of working privately with hundreds of people over the years, and the connection and bond that is formed is so unique, so unparalleled to anything you see in “Zoom century” or on Instagram that you just can never replicate. PERSONAL is the keyword there. Nothing beats face to face interaction. Nothing beats human moral boosting and a connection with a client in an “in person” manner. You get to see the fear in their eyes, calm them, resonate with them, and SHOW them the solution to their problems WHILE being a friend. Sure, it is much more work than copy and pasting an online workout from Google and pretending it is yours then sending it to clients like so many poor online trainers do…but in the real world…those who are passionate about what they do in this industry are who you want to find to work with. They will go above and beyond to make your new lifestyle worthwhile. They will research the best program and create it for you. They will listen and schedule meetings to go over your wants, needs or desires to become healthier. If not, you are wasting your time with your trainer or gym. Every client needs to feel loved, appreciated and thought about to help combat the negative effects the outside world has on them. Over the years, I’ve seen it! The trainer may seem GREAT when they come to train with you, but the world is full of hate and negativity(especially now), so when they leave the confines of your care, it remains up to you to get the job done! Personal interaction is what sets the tone for the day! Think about it. Have you ever had a day where you just wanted to be alone, only to be forced into a social situation where you actually end up feeling amazing and being SO happy you went or did that event? It’s like a magic jolt of caffeine to the blood! Same goes for personal training! It gives the SPARK to each client's world and lifestyle - one they may desperately need and desire. The only issue is realizing you need it and finding a trainer to match your profile! So when you think you've seen enough of the bodyweight home workouts and Zoom stuff all over the web….I challenge you to do something about your health. COVID has ruined a lot for so many, so you can do something for yourself by trying a new routine that not just gets you results, but forms a bond and a relationship with someone who truly wants to see the good in you and see you get to the goals you want! Which is WHY personal training will never fade. Which is why, to be honest, GROUP FITNESS will never fade. Go back to that “jolt of caffeine” analogy I just mentioned…the same applied to group fitness! There is NOTING like the jolt of energy, passion, excitement and release of endorphins you feel from training with friends, gym family members and people who all have the SAME goal as you! It’s a step towards a new, healthier lifestyle. The only thing stopping you is the mere fact that your monthly meals out take privilege over your health and ability to hire that trainer to help you find that love again!
What’s it worth to you? Is personal training going to die? (laughing inside because of how silly that sounds) Not unless the predicted stat of our country being 70% obese somehow got cut in half during quarantine….but I know even you laughed at that statement!
